Don’t fall into a money trap

Crime Stoppers Australia

Money launderers have changed how they recruit. Rather than criminals, they now go after everyday people, international students among them, with easy money offers and fake job ads designed to lure them into handing over their bank details. The approach arrives as the most ordinary thing in the world: a text message. So we made the danger visible. A phone sitting in the jaws of a bear trap. A message dangling from a fishing hook. Bait, once you know to look for it.

Because a large part of the audience doesn't read English as a first language, the idea had to land before a single word was read, and a trap is a trap in any language. Leading with social video, the campaign ran across digital, out of home, radio, and airport media, translated into Chinese, Nepali and Punjabi, among others.

On campus, realistic 3D-printed bear traps appeared at universities around the country, stopping people long enough to engage them with volunteers and printed media at information booths. The work asks for two things: know the signs, and report anything suspicious safely and anonymously through Crime Stoppers.

Funded by the Commonwealth Government and developed in consultation with the Department of Home Affairs, AUSTRAC, law enforcement and industry, the campaign runs in every state and territory as part of a coordinated national effort to disrupt money laundering at the point of recruitment.
